"We are indebted to Mr Elias Harrison of Catrine
for this interesting old photograph of a cattle show at Catrine sometime between
1810-1890. The show was held in what is now the local playpark, which was one
of the fields of Catrine Farm before being taken over by Ayr County Council. From
a close examination of the photograph it will be noted that several well-known
houses of considerable age had not been erected when this event took place, though
it has proved difficult to obtain the dates on which these were subsequently built.
The big house which now forms the workshop of Messrs Chisholm, joiners, is clearly
visible. From the large turnout it would seem obvious that considerable interest
was taken in this show, which we can only assume was a forerunner of the Catrine
Cattle Show, as we know it today. The judges would appear to be deliberating on
their placings in a turnout for ponies and traps when this photograph was taken.
We will, of course, be interested to hear from readers who may be able to help
us pinpoint more accurately the actual date of this event. In fact, during the
next few weeks, we would be glad to receive old photographs of this nature, which
may prove of general interest."
