Discovering this web site has been so exciting for all of the family and was made even more interesting when we found a photo of my niece in front of Poosie Nancies and a photo of her mother (my sister Margaret Fell) in front of Lint Mill. My father, now 90 lives with us and is having a wonderful time reviewing the photos of people and places he knows. It is one of the best village sites that I have seen on the internet, - keep up the good work.

Comments: Hi everyone and Kenny,I visited this site last year and it was great to find the birthplace (SORN) of my Peden anscestors. First ancestor was James Pethein/Peden, next was his son Alexander born in late 1500's.All the Peden's will go back to James and Alexander Peden. My ancestor was a G.G. Grandson of Alexander. His father James had immigrated to Antrim, Ireland and his son John and wife Peggy McDill and all their children immigrated to Chester Co.S.C.in 1761..I passed this address on to a Peden website so there will be many of Alexander Peden's descendents visiting this website and signing the guestbook. Comments: Looking for any long-lost relatives out there. Great-great-grandfather George Park (b.1835) was from South Limmerhaugh farm but left to become a surgeon. His parents were Hugh Park (b.1799) and Jean Hamilton; Hugh's parents were George Park and Agnes McGaan or McGavin. Other farms connected with this family: Burntshield, Merkland. George married Marion Clark, daughter of James Clark and Marion McKinlay, of Auchenlongford farm. Marion McK. died young and James then married Marion Lindsay. Would love to hear from anyone who knows these farms or is descended from the same people.

My grandmother Lizzie Liddell still lives in sorn. I have been back 4 times and it is a great place, the church is magnificent and is where my parents Elizabeth (Betty) and Edward (Eddie) Davidson where married. I have emailed my mother a picture of her Grandfather- she was thrilled.

We visited Sorn to look at a house at the top of the hill (which is for sale). From your site, we think it may be the house now standing on the old Woodhead Sorn site. Anyway, we thought the village was lovely and we will visit again some time. The site is really interesting - well done.

I was brought up in Catrine from 1953-1964. I am sure I swam or played in the river as seen in the Black-Horse photo ? was there a big house really close to it...seemed big to me in those days. Is anyone there interested in corresponding to an old 47 year old ? Keep up this great work it made my day....

Comments: You are to be congratulated on a very nice website. It is important that people, such as you, take the time to preserve local history. Information such as this effects the lives and hearts of many people all over the world. Last autumn my family visited the village of Catrine and found it to be beautiful as well as the surrounding countryside. We visited it because it was the birthplace of my Grandfather. His name was John Cameron Smith. He was born in 1892 and attended the Congregational Church in Catrine. In about 1910 he and his family moved to Glasgow, but he always considered Catrine to be his family home. He served with distinction in the Royal Navy during World War I and afterward immigrated with my Grandmother to the U.S. While I was growing up, he told us often about his childhood on a farm in or near Catrine. He would also tell us stories about how in the past his ancestors were forced to worship outside in the surrounding hills because of religious persecution. I believe he may have been talking about the Covenanters. Unfortunately, we did not have much time at all to spend in Catrine and like so many others, I would like to ask anyone out there for any family information they might have on John Cameron Smith. I believe that both his Father and Grandfather were also name John Cameron Smith or just John Smith. His Mothers name was Jean Muir, also I believe of Catrine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to contact me at this e-mail address. Thank you.

Comments: My grandmother, ISABELLA Cuthbert Davidson McKie LEES was born in Mauchline at Slatehole Cottage Nov. 29, 1892. Her mother JANET LEES was a farm servant (born Oct. 18, 1865) in Auchinleck) and gave birth to her daughter out of wedlock (illegitimate).

I have been looking for photos of the cottages where people lived in Mauchline, specifically Slatehole Cottage.

Since Janet Lees gave her daughter, Isabella up for adoption, I have not been able to locate either a marriage certificate or death certificate for Janet Lees. I have located Janet Lees in the 1891 census working at Craigencroy, Maybole Parish.

If anyone makes a connection here, I would appreciate hearing from the.

Thanks.

Comments: Kenny, I’m very surprised to see that Sornweb has been taken offline. I had assumed that the site would be a permanent feature, especially since it was hosted by a local authority server.

For the past three years Sornweb has been the best online resource for finding local Ayrshire history on the internet. I know there are many other excellent local sites, and there are also some statistical sites, like the one created by Edinburgh University. Their are also a great many sites which would cover specific historical themes or subjects throughout Scotland. But I have yet to find a local website which covers such a comprehensive range of topics pertaining to the history of Ayrshire parishes.

I am also shocked to see that South Ayrshire Council have removed the site, rather than encourage it and similar sites to come under the same umbrella to create an exhaustive Ayrshire archive online.

Perhaps this action will encourage, rather than deter you from continuing to serve the global community by finding a new host and continuing with this worthwhile project.

Comments: Devastated to find that your excellent site is no longer on-line. What a loss after all the hard work that had obviously been put into it. The pictures and information were excellent.

I believe that some Family History Societies have been contacted by the Scottish Assembly. Seemingly genealogy is the new growth industry. In that case there surely must be support somewhere to keep your site on-line.

As secretary of Tay Valley Family History Society I found that many of our enquiries came by e-mail, so people out there obviously make use of their computers. My granny was born at West Glenbuck farm where the Callans had farmed since the 1790s. I was over the moon when I came across the pictures of Sorn, Glenbuck, etc. Surely other people shouldn't be denied the joy of finding them.

As East Ayrshire is an area from which a great deal of industry has disappeared it is surely imperative that some means of encouraging people to come and spend their money is found. A site such as the Sorn one does just that. It lets people who are interested in the area, but have never visited, see what it is like. Having seen the pictures I am sure that many will be encouraged to come to see the real thing.

Thanks for all your hard work. Good luck in finding a new site provider. Hope to find you up and running again soon.

Comments: I have had trouble accessing private guest book signatures. Please send personal e mails to my home e mail address.

I would like to express my thanks for the support shown to Sornweb/ ayrshirehistory.com since we have been taken off line by South Ayrshire Council, amid claims of a shortage of server space!! We are currently in talks with two other separate sources, both of whom have agreed to host the site. As yet though, neither are on line, but I am hopeful for a fast reinstatement.

There will be an update and link on the skeleton South Ayrshire site, as soon as the new host URL is known.

All signatures of this guestbook are very welcome, and are being used to lobby local authorities for assistance. I find it sad that politics can get in the way of a worthwhile archive, which is certainly the largest digital archive in Ayrshire.

Thank you all again, and keep checking the home pages for the latest developments.

Kenny Baird

Comments: To whatever authorities this concerns - Please continue to support this site ! As a first-generation American whose whole family hails from Ayrshire I am in need of all available websites pertaining to Ayrshire and its history. They provide invaluable information to me since I have little resources available to me about this Scottish region here in US. I have just discovered this site and would love an opportunity to use it ! Thank You

Comments: Enjoyed thoroughly the old photographs of Sorn and Catrine. I spent most of my school holidays at the A.M. Brown Institute, Catrine where my grandmother was caretaker. My ancestors lived in Sorn - Thomsons, McKnights, Smiths. I have a group photograph circa 1868 of the family at Sorn taken before a daughter left for Canada.

Comments: I'm so glad you are back. I was stunned that such a rich, high quality, historically relevant website was off line. As a result of signing the guestbook on the old site I heard from friends of my childhood (Catrine School and Cumnock Academy). Nice to be able to visit again. Thanks to all the generous people who share so freely the photos etc from their family archives. Put the kettle on for a wee cuppa!

I would love to hear from anyone with information about my ggggrandparents, Charles and Elizabeth McLauchlan and their children: John, Elizabeth Clark, Hugh, Margaret Killin, Mary Kelly, Susannah Jamieson and Charlotte Lucas. They all lived in Sorn/Catrine in the first half of the 1800s. The children eventually moved to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Thank you.

Comments: What a fantasic site, well done and thank you

Living in Australia and tracing my family to Sorn, Catrine & Mauchline has been fun, but to find a site that has photo's and histories to make me feel as though I am there is unbelievable!

My GG Grandparents came to Australia in 1885 on the Gulf of Venice. They were William LUCAS & Mary Jane YOUNG. William was born at Sorn in 1855 to Andrew LUCAS & Charlotte McLAUCHLAN. As far as I have ascertained so far two of William's brothers came down here as well. James b.1866 came on the Gulf of Venice with them and Daniel, the eldest born in 1849 came down earlier around 1880.
Andrew's parents were Daniel LUCAS and Agnes PATON.

From the guest book I have found a link on Charlottes line, YIPPEE. Leonie Malins if you read this please contact.

So, please keep up the good work.

If any name ring bells for you please visit my pages for Lineages!

To Peter Bolton, another cousin recently found, thank you for referring me to this site and bringing Scotland alive for me!

Comments: I was fortunate enough to live in Sorn for a year. The village became my home, sort of the first place I could call that, after spending my whole life travelling the world. Unfortunately, sometime you have to leave home, but I hope to be able to return. I miss the village itself, all the friendly people,(some of whom I now call my best friends ), and Sorn Inn of course.
Kenny, many thanks for putting up this site, gives me the chance to visit Sorn as often as I like, in a way.
Stay well everybody.
Leif
