THE RIVER AYR WINTER 2009 / 2010

After the initial thick snowfall just before Christmas 2009, there was a cold snap immediately following. The River Ayr was frozen and bearing easily for the first time in a few years.

The river was certainly frozen solid between Christmas and New Year in the mid winter of 1995. It was also bearing in 2001, though not to the extent of the 1995, or last couple of winters. There are good photographs of the ice in 1981 available as well.

On 15th January 2010 around 2215, the ice broke up and caused a great rush of thick ice crashing down the River Ayr. Unfortunately this happened in the dark, and it was not possible to get too many good shots. The video below is about the best available. It is a movie file, shot by a NIKON camera, and will play in VLC player amongst others.

The next day, January 16th 2010, the River Ayr in Sorn looked like this!!! Not as high as it has ever been, but certainly very much above normal!! Image 1-4 taken at the back of the Village Hall, and 5 from the New Bridge. Number 6 is looking into Morrison's Dam, and Craigend.
