From the collection of and used in John Taylor Gibb's book on page 29, this image shows that the roof of Poosie Nansie's was partially slated by 1911. On page 26 of the JTG book, mention is made of the lower roof being recently slated. This was perhaps to allow a proper gutter as seen here. The building on the right of the image is at this stage the co-operative, which is on the site of the Whitefoord Arms, an establishment familiar to Burns. The building still seen there today, dates from 1866, and was built after the pub was destroyed, as described in Jolly's 1881 book, Burns At Mossgiel . No mention is made of how it was destroyed. The building has gone through many changes since this image was taken, and today is a sports shop, a kebab shop, and a dwelling house in the upper floors. The plaque on the chimney has been moved to the gable at some point in time, and the centre chimney stack removed. There was a time when there were large shop windows upstaird as well, as portrayed in Willie's lantern slide files.
