From the John Taylor Gibb collection, this photograph of Mossgiel prior to the 1858 renovations was used on page 53 of the JTG book. Obviously this image was used for the previous illustration. It is not any way as clear as the other photo from 1858, and certainly taken at a different time. The trees are not in leaf in this image, but slideshow 224 shows an obvious summer view.
