WILDLIFE
AND NATURE IN AYRSHIRE: In this page, we shall include some photos taken
of the wildlife around Ayrshire. The writer is no expert on wildlife
photography because of auto focus camera limitations, but occasionally
the odd reasonable shot is taken. |
COMA BUTTERFLY
Coma
Butterfly Sorn 2012. (21st August). This is the first sighting by Kenny
of this particular butterfly. Typically, it was sitting perfect on the
flowers and stayed till a camera was grabbed, but closed up shortly
afterwards and never reopened until it took off. It wasn't in a particularly
ideal position for a photo unfortunately, after getting the camera!!
The image on the left was shot from a short distance away. |
SMALL HEATH BUTTERFLY
Small
Heath butterfly on the back roads between Mauchline and Sorn in July
2011. Despite a good chase, it never opened properly for a decent photo.
This was a phone photo. |
PAINTED
LADY BUTTERFLY
Painted
Ladies seen on Ailsa Craig August 2009. One was spotted and chased near
Sorn also in August 2009, but it wouldn't settle to be photographed. |
RED ADMIRAL BUTTERFLY
Red Admirals, Sorn - August 2010, the closed Red Admiral on the right. |
Red Admirals. There were three or four together on the large yellow flowers, right on the banks of the River Ayr in Sorn - August 2009 |
TORTOISE SHELL BUTTERFLY
Tortoise Shell in Sorn, August 2012. These seems to be an abundance of these butterflies this year, despite the generally wet weather conditions. On the right there are four seen on the one plant. |
Tortoise Shell near Mauchline, August 2012. There seemed to be something a little unusual looking with this one, but this bad quality phone photo was the best that could be achieved at the time. Maybe it was newly out it's chrysalis?? Right: Tortoise Shell caterpillars perhaps?? On nettle patch, Sorn, Summer 2012. |
Tortoise
Shell near Walkmill, Catrine, 2006, left. A few seen around Sorn in
2009. |
PEACOCK BUTTERFLY
Peacock butterflies, Sorn 2009, and below taken at Sorn in 2010. |
Peacock butterflies, left 2005 at Sorn, and centre and right taken at Sorn in 2004. Unfortunately both close up shots look like older butterflies, and not young newly developed ones. The centre photo shows two on the wall at the Manse in Sorn. Also spotted a number in 2009, in and around Sorn. |
MOTHS
Left: Swallowtailed moth which flew in to the house in Sorn, July 2007. The other two are a pair of unknown moths, both taken in Sorn in 2008. centre April 2008, right May 2008. UPDATE: Centre - Herald, and right Popular Hawkmoth. |
