Taken from the outskirts of Mauchline, as it was at this time, perhaps pre 1878,
when the old turnpike road tolls were abandoned. Certainly the toll gates are
still to be seen by the tollhouse and the entrance to the box works just beyond.
The posts beside the gates are presumably to prevent unauthorised entry to the
village (Sneaking through without paying the toll) This is the only image we
have seen so far of this view which includes the toll gates.
