Farther up the deserted street, a man and his dog look around at the sight of a rare Photographer. The low single storey houses in the centre, do not at this stage even have the archway into the Abbey Kirk built on to the far side of them. This may suggest an image pre-dating the Abbey Kirk, which was opened on 16th August 1884. (If we can assume the archway was built at the same time as the kirk) This may tie in with the paintwork on the gable of Poosie Nansie's which only reads POSTING ESTABLISHMENT at this time, as it does on an 1880 image, but no writing on the 1870s photo. This early date may also mean that it was Mr Ballantine with his camera and not JTG. (JTG born 1864) In his 1911 book, JTG tells us that the images in the book are taken by himself, bar some of the earlier ones, which were taken by Ballantyne.
