Burngrange Lane from the JTG collection, we see the lane near the newly rebuilt
Ramsay & Jackson/ Lawrence buildings. The small building on the left is
still there, in the corner of Miltons Yard. The house on the right is gone,
as is the thatched house beside it. The red sandstone building in its place
is dated 1907, therefore this image pre-dates that time. To the left beyond
the men, is Gibb's Lane, which still takes you to the High Street at the side
of the Ballochmyle Inn. The name Gibb's Lane came from John Taylor Gibb's family,
as his father once owned the Ballochmyle Inn, which was called Gibb's Inn in
the late 1800s. By 1911, it had taken up the current name of the Ballochmyle
Inn, although a bigger three storey, or correctly putting it a two and a half
storey building. The so called River Chalk, or Chalk Burn, or Mauchline Burn
is seen here uncovered. Today it is covered. This is one of the areas of the
village where during the great flood of 1859, much
damage was done. By coincidence, another contributor had a similar
photograph, though not as clear. It can also be viewed 2 frames on in this
slideshow.
