Photo - Willie Lyle, Mauchline
This view shows Loudoun Street from the top of Mauchline Parish Church. The large building in the foreground was demolished, making way for a Cooperative building. The present day Chinese, and General Store are still located within the old Cooperative building. There are various photographs in this collection/ web site which include the building, but alas we have none which feature exclusively this part of Loudoun Street. The late Willie Lyle who supplied the image suggests that there may have been a name for the building, rather than just a Street Number. He thought it was something Place (Like Wilson Place, Jamieson Place etc seen elsewhere in Mauchline) This however has never been proved or disproved. Also to be seen in this image is the wall on the right of the picture which once separated Netherplace Estate from the village. The buildings and byres at the back of Number 1 Loudoun Street can be clearly seen, the site of the present day Loudoun Car Park. These are just beyond the grounds and driveway into of Mauchline Castle, or "Gavin Hamilton's Hoose" as the premises are affectionately known as. Gavin Hamilton owned the house in the time of Burns. It is such a pity there were not more photos like this one, taken from the top of the Parish Kirk. The unique image of Mauchline Boxworks on this web site is also taken from the same location, and can be dated as sometime before 1899, although this one of Loudoun Street is more difficult to date. Who knows, maybe the images were taken on the same day??
