POOSIE NANSIE'S
INN, MAUCHLINE
Poosie
Nansie's historical inn at Mauchline enjoys the attention of the scholars
of Robert Burns, and is regularly visited by followers of The Bard on
their travels throughout Burns country. This June 2011 view is taken
from Mauchline old Kirkyard. Only just seen on the right of the photo
is the gable of the building which occupies the site of the Whitefoord
Arms, where Burns would chat to his Bonnie Jean (Jean Armour) from the
back window. |
The
above pencil drawing is known as "THE WILSON" sketch, dating
to 1803. Poosie Nansie's is on the left. Shown on the right is the Whitefoord
Arms, while in the centre up "The Coogate" is the
Armour house as it was at the time of Burns. Since this is before photography,
this is one of the earliest impressions of Poosie Nansie's and around
the general area, which was more than familiar to Burns. |
